Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Heroines Who Inspire Me

Okay, so I'm late...and haven't posted in a week. But I come with exciting news. I am working on my Art Fact Sheet for HOW TO SALSA IN A SARI. This includes character descriptions, settings, cover art ideas, etc etc so the designers have some idea of what to do for the cover. Cool, huh? I'll have a cover soon!!

Also, Lovely Agent liked my proposal for book 2, tentatively titled HOW LIA MET ANA (thanks for the title BBGs! Without my friends, my books wold all be called Book 1, Book 2, etc) Now I need to finish it! I also have an awesome idea for a 3rd YA if Kimani decides to re-sign me.

Now, without further adieu, 10 Heroines Who Inspire Me and the reason's why!

1. Scarlett O'Hara: GONE WITH THE WIND. Can there be any other? Fiesty, fearless Scarlett who will do anything to get what she wants. She has no fear. I can't help but love her despite never wanting to be in her way!

2. Katherine Dance: COLD MOON. This is a new detective who crops up in Jeffrey Deaver's latest novel. Katherine is a "reader". She can tell when a person is lying or telling the truth just by having a conversation with them and reading their body language. She is also super-funky and cool and doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks of her...even the talented Lincoln Rhyme, the lead detective in the novel. I look forward of seeing more of her in Deaver's next novel.

3. Darcy Rhone: SOMETHING BLUE. Does Darcy need any introduction? I know a lot of people don't like or understand the character, but how can I not be insprired by a girl who crosses the pond to give birth to her twins with absolutely no plan in mind, except to rely on her charms. Love her courage. Can't wait to see more of her (MORE DARCY, EMILY!!! PLEASE!!!)

4. Maggie Feller: IN HER SHOES. I loved Maggie's transformation in this novel. She went from a spoiled, selfish brat to a girl who wanted to be known for her mind. Love the person she became at the end of the novel...her story makes me believe that it is never too late.

5. Serena van der Woodsen: GOSSIP GIRL. Poor little rich girl takes life into her own hands. Shunned by her friends for being too beautiful, too rich, too...alive, Serena makes friends with the average folks and finds happiness on her own. The series is somewhat soap-ey, but I love her character.

6. Vivi : TALES OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD. Vivi spends her youth frolicking and living the good life with her *sisters* the Ya-Yas. As she grows older, life's responsiblities take over and she realizes she has to grow up in the face of tragedy striking her true love.

Fun, vivacious Vivi fancies herself a Scarlett O'Hara and never gives up her zest for life (or Mint Juleps!)

7. Jo March : LITTLE WOMEN. Who wouldn't admire a girl who refuses her best friend's marriage proposal...Jo is unwilling to sacrifice finding her true love, even if it means losing Laurie's friendship forever.

8. Stephanie Plum: PLUM Series. She's crazy. She's fun. She's damn lucky to have the choice of Joe Morelli and Ranger. Any other girl would settle down with commitment-wanting Joe, but Steph's just not ready quite yet....

9. Katheryn Lyons: THE PILOT'S WIFE. What would you do if you discovered your dead husband was living a double life...and had a child with another woman? Katherine reacts way better than I would. She grows from being a dependent wife to a strong, powerful woman who forgives the man who betrayed her and finds herself in her sorrow.

10. Sugar Beth Carey: AIN'T SHE SWEET. We all hate Sugar Beth in high school. The pretty, powerful cheerleader who has it all. And we all love to see Sugar Beth fall post-high school. This character manages the unthinkable...she makes us feel sorry for the most popular girl in school. Her spunk, spirit and desire to do the right thing for once inspires me to believe that once again, it is never too late.

These women all kick-ass. They all know what they want, they may or may not have a plan, but they're not afraid to live their lives on their own terms. Yes, they hurt people, yes, they are seen as "users", but hey, men can get away with it, why not women?

Interestingly enough, almost none of these women have a very well-defined love life...either they are unlucky in love, or just don't seem to have the time for it.

Also, interesting enough. The books listed above are some of my favorites and are permenant fixtures on my KEEP shelf. I think it goes to show: a memorable heroine makes for a memorable read...

My goal is to create a heroine this memorable in my next novel.

I'm very curious about what my blog buddies say are the heroines who inspire them...Happy Wednesday everyone!

I totally agree with your take on kick-ass heroines and love. I was blocked for the longest time on my current WIP because I couldn't find the *right* hero for my heroine. It took a long time for the A-HA moment to kick in - if no hero fits then perhaps the cosmos is trying to tell me that my heroine's hero is herself (does that make ANY sense?!!)

I think my favorite on your list was Jo March. I love that book (and the 1949 movie version!)
Hmm... I think I would add Massy Block from The Clique. I can't help it! She's so caddy, smart, and fabulous! And all the girls from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Especially Libby.
Ooh, good topic though. I'm going to have to keep thinking.
